- Testosterone falls gradually from around the age of 30.
- Low levels can show up as fatigue, low drive and poor recovery.
- Symptoms alone are unreliable, it takes a measurement.
- Sleep, training and weight affect the level markedly.
What does testosterone do?
It's the most important androgen hormone in men, and relevant in smaller amounts in women. It regulates muscle mass, bone density, libido, mood and energy metabolism.
When is it low?
The level falls naturally with age. Persistent fatigue, declining drive, poor sleep and loss of muscle mass can point to a genuinely low level, but only a blood test can confirm it.
What you can do yourself
- Prioritise sleep
- Strength-train regularly
- Normalise weight and visceral fat
- Limit alcohol
Treatment, with caution
Hormone therapy can be relevant in documented deficiency, but never as a shortcut. It belongs with a specialist physician on the basis of thorough measurements, not a self-bought supplement.
